I'm just wondering more than anything, but is there a benefit to having both this and {{tem|Stars}}? They're basically one-to-one copies of each other, repeating the same information in basically the same manner. It's not like we have nav templates for [[:Category:Fire Creatures|Category:Fire Creatures]] or [[:Category:Plants|Category:Plants]] or something, so what makes this one special? {{User:Time Turner/sig}}

The thing keeping categories from being redundant despite being unable to sort the different types of its subjects (the template's claim to fame) is that they can be used for subcatgorization (i.e. into [[:category:Koopas]] or [[:category:Mammals]], etc.), unlike templates. This one's admittedly a bit more awkward to place ''into'' wider categories, and all the Lumas should just go into the template like the Crystal Stars (with [[:category:Crystal Stars]] being scrapped, in all honesty), unlike other cases where subcategories ''can't'' fit into the nav templates. But still, it would seem lacking if there was no "Stars" category when most other major subjects like [[:category:Mushrooms|Mushrooms]] and [[:category:Flowers|Flowers]] get categories,( and if we delete it, someone's just gonna come along and remake it sooner or later), but oh well, a bit of overlap isn't the end of the world. Plus, not everyone remembers to add links to templates and/or categories to pages, so having both doubles our chances of someone getting at least one or the other right, which in turn increases the odds of someone else noticing the page and fixing the rest. - {{User:Walkazo/sig}} 15:04, 13 November 2015 (EST)

I was lost the moment [[Angry Sun]] was listed here as if it was the same thing as a Starman. We're not helping people navigate if we're making people guess whether the article they're clicking is based on the stars of our solar system or the stars of the Mario series. Both this category (and the [[Template:Stars|associated template]]) are in desperate need of some sort of retooling, that much is abundantly clear, but how we should go about it is more debatable. I'll try to cover all of my bases with the following options:

The Super Star (also known as the Starman) is the five-pointed star with two black eyes and occasionally a mouth, and a large portion of the stars here are clearly based on that original design. Anything obviously based on the Sun and other such stars are immediately out, such as [[Beacon]], [[Brighton]], and the [[Sun]], as well as stars that don't have the traditional black eyes, such as the [[Crystal Stars]], [[Star Rod (Paper Mario)|Star Rod]], [[Goal Star]], and others. Note that this also involves keeping the species, including [[Star Spirits]] and [[Luma (species)|Luma]]s.

This is similar to option 1, but it would also disclude objects, locations, and species - anything that isn't an item like the Super Star. Everything from option 1 would still be removed, but [[Star Spirits]], [[Luma (species)|Luma]]s, [[Star Gate]], [[Star Road (Super Mario World)]], [[Star World]], and others would also be removed.

This is again similar to option 1, but while Brighton, the Sun et al. are still discluded, more cartoonish or stylized Stars would be included. [[Crystal Stars]] and [[Goal Star]]s now stay, as do [[Star Cure]], [[Shooting Star (item)|Shooting Star]], [[Yoshi Star]], and others.

I'll personally vouch for options 1 and 2: while the traditional five-pointed star has been used countlessly many times in other media, those stars with the two black dots for eyes are a Mario staple, and if someone is looking into stars on the ''Mario'' wiki, that's what they're going to be looking for.
If requested, I'm willing to make a comprehensive list of what would be kept with each option.

I like option 2 because the original Super Star is an item and I think more people would be looking for items than anything else (plus the weird edge cases like Star Road get swiftly dealt with), but at the same time, it also removes Star Spirits and Star (species), which are also really close to the original Super Stars. It'd be weird to have an option that says "Get rid of all of these non-item Stars, except for two pages", wouldn't it? ::There's a difference between the real-world stars and the Mario world stars, and trying to lump both of them together without a clear distinction is confusing at best and silly at worst.
