Cars are land vehicles, and they are used for racetracks set on the road.

| In the original version, every character's vehicle has their own unique color, including cars, though each one's tires are always red. In Diddy Kong Racing DS, every character's vehicles are yellow by default. The player can access Taj's Wishes Menu to purchase upgrades for a car's speed, handling, and acceleration. They can also customize a car's paint color from a slider or put an emblem on it, much like in Mario Kart DS. While the cars are modeled in-game in the original Diddy Kong Racing, their wheels are prerendered sprites set to always face the camera (a rendering technique called "billboarding"). The vehicle colors in the original version are as follows:
| | Cars (not to be confused with Karts) are playable vehicles in Diddy Kong Racing and Diddy Kong Racing DS. The karts vary with each character and are usable in all levels except Hot Top Volcano, Everfrost Peak, Spacedust Alley, and Darkmoon Caverns. Each character has a different kart color: |

| The player can select a course's available vehicles to race in from either the "Tracks" menu or by completing a Silver Coin Challenge (or Balloon Touch Challenge in the DS remake).
| | Cars are also obstacles appearing in the Mario Kart series. They rarely appear in the game and actually only appear in a few courses: Toad's Turnpike, Mushroom Bridge and Mushroom City, Shroom Ridge, and Moonview Highway. Additionaly, in Coconut Mall, there are three red convertibles that move back and forth towards the end of the lap, making it more difficult to navigate through. Miis can be seen inside the cars at Coconut Mall. |
| | |
| | When a player crashes into a car, he or she will spin out or be launched into the air and then come back down. The cars in the game are used as obstacles for the player. When a player crashes into one of the cars, the car will sometimes honk. |
| | |
| | It should also be noted that Wario is one of the few Marioverse characters known to own a car, the Wario Car. |
| | |
| | In the Mario Kart DS mission 4-3, the player's task is to reach the finish before a red car. |
|
| |
|
| Cars are usable in every level except Hot Top Volcano, Whale Bay, Pirate Lagoon, and Boulder Canyon, where the player must use a hovercraft or plane instead. Cars are usable in Everfrost Peak in the original Nintendo 64 version, but since the course's icy pond is thawed in the DS release, cars cannot be used in the stage. Cars are most commonly the default vehicle compared to hovercrafts and planes. Cars and their availability status in the courses are as follows:
| | In Mario Party Advance, in order to travel around Party World, players would utilize a car that used Mushrooms for fuel. Cars have also appeared many times in a few episodes of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3. In the Super Mario Bros. film, the cars of Dinohatten were portrayed as running on electricity and were exceptionally run-down and bizarre in appearance. |

| | Other than the racing games and the show appearances, cars don't seem to be a common form of transportation on Mushroom World, unlike in Earth, where the car is a commonly used form of transportation. |
