These devices appear in [[Button Barrel Blast]] and some [[Bonus Level]]s only. In Button Barrel Blast, they are used to cross large gaps, similarly to the purpose of [[Barrel Cannon]]s, but since they usually aim off-track, [[Donkey Kong]] or [[Diddy Kong]] usually have to use a corresponding button to change the direction of the Button Barrel, turning it slightly right or left when jumping on the button. After orienting the Button Barrel in the desired direction, the active Kong can jump into a Button Barrel to blast out in the direction it is facing. Button Barrels in Bonus Levels move around the area both quickly and automatically, and button is used in conjunction with the Button Barrel, although it is now used to shoot [[Kong Token]]s out from it.

During gameplay in Button Barrel Blast, these special, but rare, barrels can be used to cross large gaps. The barrels, used in a similar manner to [[Barrel Cannon]]s, usually aim off-track, so the [[Kong]]s have to use nearby buttons to move them. Each time the button is hit, the large barrel will turn slightly to the right or left. When the Button Barrel aims at the correct target, the two heroes can jump inside of it and fire into the air.

Additionally, Button Barrels appear in certain Bonus Levels of the game. When seen in one of these bonuses, they automatically move quickly across the area. Hitting the button nearby controls the barrel, as usual, though it can not aim it. Instead, one of the apes' [[Kong Token]]s will shoot out of it. If this token is caught as it flies across the small area, the group will be granted with an [[Extra Life]].
